Down with Goldman Sachs!

UPDATE – And yes, he was an excellent prankster, an attention seeker not a trader.

The Rastani Moment – Well done. More believable than the traders you lampooned.

But let’s look at some of that content.

The power of Goldman Sachs is utterly undeniable – its representation in Obama’s cabinet – from the earliest days – is stunning. Were I a financier Id be in awe of what they’ve gotten away with it!! His (overdone!) shark-ish attitude was precisely the thing which drove the SPM and CDF fiascos that led to the 2008 crash. The film Inside Job describes *how* the bankers did it. Precisely that attitude to selling (whatever cost (deferred)). And they’re doing it again – because our governments have REWARDED that bad behaviour. And for those in the game, it doesn’t matter whether the markets go up or down, they live off gambling well.

This is why it’s right to regard most financial trading as merely a big game. And right that it be highly regulated so real people don’t suffer!

And with the severest penalties for companies who get too big and for politicians who enable them.

Free-market capitalism has just about enslaved all humanity. We must break the chains of this most cruel and deceptive ruler.

Sherman and Mangano have a point

Back in April, not long after Fukushima blew up, two US scientists who had done a lot of work on Cherbnobyl, went looking for effects of the radiation plume on American cities.

They found statistically significant increases in a baby deaths in a number of US cities. However these were entirely rubbished by Scientific American who ate the figures for breakfast – and word spread everywhere.

But to be completely sure, someone asked over at Counterpunch. Their analyst found you could indeed play with the  statistics, that S&Ms statistics were valid, and in fact there were other figures to give more pause for thought.

We’re not used to looking for radiation deaths. We may have heard about the thyroid, but have we heard about increased heart attacks and arrhythmias? Another study over the next month would be to see if there is an increase in birth defects – or indeed if there was a spike in abortions over these intervening months.

http://www.counterpunch.org/cockburn06172011.html

Fukushima is still the wrong story.

  • Serious radioactivity has reached Tokyo, as measured from car air filters
  • high radioactivity, presence of eg Caesium-137
  • Tokyo, its cars and its children, are seriously contaminated
  • Authorities say levels of Cs-137 are safe.
  • BUT mothers are reporting the same child symptoms as for Belarus children after Chernobyl.
  • As in Chernobyl, Caesium-137  will be causing child heart attack and arrhythmias, and will mean early deaths.
  • Heart cells don’t replenish themselves – contaminated children will die young.
  • Authorities are making only superficial whole body measurements.

The information from the authorities compared to parents should not be a  tennis match! The children are ill – and we know what’s going to happen! These are the same radionuclides as Chernobyl.

I have measured more radioactivity in a car air  filter than they are measuring in a child!

What can we do? We can remove the children from contaminated areas.

But there’s another ominous development.  The Japanese government are transporting radioactive material  the length of Japan for burning.

Why burn it so far away!!??

Prof Busby believes the reason is,  when the children start to die from heart attacks, leukaemia, etc.,  the Japanese government will then be able to say this nothing unusual.  There will be no control group.  Effectively they are contaminating ALL all of Japan. Why? The most obvious reason is the protection of the nuclear industry.  [Japan is highly reliant on nuclear power. The reactors are American]

Blocking absorption.

The other radionuclides are NOT being measured. But they can be pre-empted by taking stable variants. Eg, iodine goes to the thyroid gland. So you provide stable iodine and the radionuclide version can’t get a hold.  Japan has not done this! This technique can be used with all the radionuclides.

None of these can be measured by whole body tests. Large amounts of calcium and magnesium, a tablet every day. We will supply these! Block ingress of other radionuclides. Chris Busby Foundation (Japanese website), and we will do our own independent measuring and tell the truth of the concentrations. We must Save the Children of Fukushima. The Japanese government seem committed to saving the international nuclear industry.

The TPA, no ordinary alliance of taxpayers.

I was on radio today with Matthew Sinclair of the TPA. We did battle over the priorities of governments and governing. I got over that we are a rich country and need to tax properly: the billions to be recovered from tax evasion, £70 bn, tax avoidance £25 bn, and uncollected revenue (cheques in the post, etc) £25 bn.

He questioned my source for the figures for these, so I said Richard Murphy (the foremost tax researcher on these issues) and Sinclair just wrote his figures off. Sinclair then defended the need for the UK to cut even further – despite the IMF saying we’ve cut enough! So they’re really a right-wing monetarist group who want less tax and smaller public services. No surprise to learn they have rich donors. In fact they are a business with frequent donations of £5000 and the like.

So let’s see what Richard Murphy has to say about the TPA’s recent report –

Original post.

The Taxpayers’ Alliance have published a report this morning in which they claim:

 Over the last five financial years  £27.4 bn of tax revenue has been lost by  HMRC through remissions or write-offs.
 That is over £1,000 per household lost in tax over the last five years, or £200 per year.
 £5.9 bn was lost in 2010-11. If this money was collected, it would be possible to cut more than 1% off the standard rate of VAT.
 Over the period studied, £4.4 bn has been lost in Income Tax alone. The amount of Income Tax lost in 2010-11 was 52 per cent higher than in 2006-07.

As a result they claim:

A much simpler tax system could help to avoid errors of this scale in the future, and  the deficit could be  reduced more quickly. The 2020 Tax Commission is exploring ways to make taxes simpler and less burdensome on families and businesses, and will be publishing its final report and recommendations in Spring 2012.

I’m discussing this on Radio 5 this morning so let’s just look at the claims.

First, almost all the remissions are on tax credits. So they’re not part of the tax code. That’s a benefit.

And 90% of the bad debt is due by companies that have gone bust. So there’s not a hope of the Revenue getting the cash. I know that because the Revenue have said so.

Which leaves not a lot left over, almost all of which is due to the fact that the Revenue haven’t got the resources to track people who move, or refuse to pay relatively small suns of tax which aren’t worth taking to court.

So how much of this is due to complexity in the tax code? About the square root of not a lot I’d say.

The TPA really do need to learn a little about tax, business, insolvency and debt collecting. In other words if only they knew just a little about the real world of business they so claim to adore they’d really be a lot wiser.

Although maybe that’s giving them just a little too much credit.

Fukushima, Aug report

Arnie Gunderson has proved himself a very reliable commentator compared to the lockdown in western media.   The problem is the Fukushima reactors are American and they’d rather not any negative publicity thanks.

So what’s he saying?

There’s a few reports claiming the core has melted through the concrete containment vessel and into ground. Arnie concludes there’s not enough evidence to tell yet.

Californian data has thrown up large amounts of Su35 since March. This is a radioactive isotope.  It indicates huge energy as it occurs only from environments with  400 BN neutrons per sq m.  So where’s it  from?

His Apr3   report  indic ated there had been incomplete shut downs and there were recurring chan reactions, “ongoing criticalities”.

In the US, the NRC staff briefed on Fukushima and told them the fuel pools had no major problems.

But fuel particles were found a mile or more from spent fuel pools!  Initially Arnie concluded these were from Unit 3 fuel pool, which had exploded depositing small pieces of fuel rod (plutonium) up to a mile away.

But this report is saying the containment was breached and caused these remote deposits. He thinks they’re wrong. But if reactors and containment have failed, they really need to look at US reactor design.

They’re now constructing a tent over Fukushima Unit 1. This will reduce site radiation but will only make the radiation airborne by releasing it through a chimney stack. It will mean less Caesium for workers but it’s only sending the radiation away.

The deposits of Caesium are extensive. The Japanese are now burning it.
In the US it would be classed as dangerous radiaoactive waste – you couldn’t burn it.

Japan is allowing 8000 disintegrations per second. They also allow blending – 24000 dints ps combined with two other items of waste with none,  gives you the required average of 8000 dps!

So ground material around Fukushima is now being airborne again through burning! This is recontaminating the areas they’ve only  just cleaned, recreating the disaster.

meanwhile radioactive rivers continue to contaminate the ocean.
Japan must recognise the tough and serious problem they have. Right now, the Japanese are worsening it, and making it more costly.

A Flavour of the Times

The Green Party passed the following Emergency Motions at Sheffield Conference, Sept 2011. (These are in addition to agenda motions).

Legal Aid and Justice for All

The Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill is at the Committee Stages of the Commons. If passed, it will remove access to advice for 650,000 people a year in employment law, welfare benefits, housing, debt, immigration, etc. In light of this, Conference calls on the Green Party Campaigns Committee to support the “Justice for All” campaign which campaigns for everyone, no matter what their financial means to be treated fairly under the law and for free legal advice.

Robin Hood Tax

Conference welcomes the endorsement of a Robin Hood Tax by Chancellor Merkel and President Sarkozy and calls on the UK Government to follow the lead of France and Germany in regulating speculation on international financial markets and generating the revenue needed to fund public investment. Conference calls on Green Party Parliamentarians to raise this with the UK Government in advance of the G20 meeting in November at Cannes.

Anti – ATOS Motion

Conference expresses deep concern at the use of ATOS to assess incapacity benefit receivers for their ability to return to work. As evidence continues to mount that the work capability assessments are being used politically to remove Employment and Support Allowance payments, with 12 doctors referred to the General Medical Council in August, Conference calls on the party leadership to demand that the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions removes ATOS as its assessor of benefit claimants.

Nuclear Waste Disposal

We call on policy committee to develop a policy on legacy high and intermediate level radioactive waste in time for Spring Conference 2012. The policy to be based on best environmental practice, not political expediency. We also call on Conference to support Allerdale and Copeland Green Party and other local groups, including West Cumbria Friends of the Earth, Radiation Free Lakeland, and CORE in their work to oppose the deep geological disposal plans and to call for alternative disposal methods to be revisited. In particular lobbying local authorities not to proceed to the next stage of the Managing Radioactive Waste Safely (MRWS) process (January 2012), at which stage the right of withdrawal would be severely compromised.

The NHS Listening Exercise

The Green Party reaffirms its commitment to a fully publicly funded NHS and its opposition to the Health and Social Care Bill, deplores the fact that the Conservative / Liberal Democrat government ‘listening exercise’ has (unsurprisingly) proved to be a sham, and demands that the Government abandon forthwith in its entirety this Bill which, if passed, will lead to the marketisation and privatisation of the NHS, having no lesser ultimate consequence than the complete destruction of our National Health Service. Conference calls on GPEx to make active campaigning against this Bill a priority.

The National Planning Policy Framework

Conference condemns the Coaltion Government’s proposed National Planning Policy Framework. The Green Party believes a function of the planning system is to protect people and the environment not to generate unsustainable economic growth. The abolition of targets for building on brownfield land, the lack of any understanding of sustainability coupled with a presumption in favour of development will make it a developers’ charter. Conference calls on elected Greens at all  levels of government to campaign vigorously against the NPPF and for the Green Party as a whole to campaign against these proposals to ensure we protect our communities, countryside and quality of life from unrestrained development.

Bombardier – Rail jobs

The Green Party condemns the Tory/Lib Dem coalition government decision to give the order for new rolling stock for Thameslink to Siemens. This failed to take into account the effect on the UK economy and jobs.

Derby-based Bombardier, the last remaining train builder in this country has announced the loss of 1400 jobs as a result of not winning the bid. The Bombardier factory in Derby is now under threat and so are thousands more jobs in the Derby area in other rail businesses that supply the factory.

We need more train carriages for our railways, both to replace those that are life-expired and to increase the size of the fleet in order to reduce overcrowding and carry more passengers.

Conference instructs GPEX to write to the Sec of State for Transport requesting him to reconsider the allocation of the Thameslink trains contract to Siemens and to ensure that British jobs in the industry are protected.

Emergency Motion on the English Riots [amended]

Conference is appalled at the outbreak of violence, looting, arson and murder that took place in English cities in August. The riots were a manifestation of anger that has deep roots and obvious triggers. The roots include inequality, loss of social cohesion, cuts in local public services, unemployment, increasing poverty, resentment against the police, consumerism and gang culture. The triggers were the death of Mark Duggan and the exceptionally inept handling of its aftermath.

To address these problems we advocate immediate action to reverse the cuts in public services, increase support for disadvantaged communities and provide a 100% earnings disregard for work of local benefit. In punishing rioters there should be more use of restorative justice and community payback orders. There must also be an independent inquiry into the death of Mark Duggan and its aftermath.

These measures, however, will not deal with the roots of the problem. We call for a public inquiry into the deeper causes of social breakdown which lie as much in the excesses of the powerful as in the conditions of the powerless. This inquiry should seek to create a consensus for remedial actions which need to be as radical as those that created the welfare state 60 years ago.

Conference calls upon our elected representatives to put forward these measures at every relevant opportunity.

Size Matters

As with many aspects of life, so with terror events. Size matters.

The events of 9/11 were unbelievable. Those of us who saw the second plane hit tower 2 – LIVE – on that fateful Tuesday have often described themselves as feeling as stunned as in the greatest scene from any disaster movie.

I was the same. The official story was the only story for me, for 3 years, well after we’d trashed Afghanistan and after we’d pulverised Iraq, despite a very active commitment to stopping that clearly mendacious and imperialist war.

But in 2004 I tripped over a BBC article saying some of the hijackers were still alive. Whoa, what gives? And indeed, from different parts of the world men had phoned in saying why am I being blamed for this? Yes, that’s my name, my passport photo – yet here I am! And I had nothing to do with those events.

And so my own reading began. But the mere size of the official story: 4 passenger planes, 19 hijackers, hijackings at the same time, cell phone calls, national targets, centres of American power and prestige, including the seat of US military might, all crashed, including a brave fightback, two towers collapsing into dust, nearly 3000 dead, itself beggars belief. We’re stunned, we’re in shock at even the possibility of the events. It’s all we can do to lend ourselves to the official story.

And then, having carefully taken it all in, what’s the likelihood that we’re going to dismantle it and very carefully adopt a whole other set of facts? Hmm, well, very small. We KNOW what happened therefore these other so-called facts must be wrong.

But we kid ourselves that we do history this way.

We forget that we’ve read Sherlock Holmes! Only the facts matter, and when you’ve eliminated the other possibilities… We forget that every cop is a ‘conspiracy theorist’ but use that label to shoot down any challenge to the official story, as if a label has any merit in itself.

We’re trained to respect authority: parents, teachers, schools, experts, government, the media, the BBC, the Stuff We’ve Learned… Questioning it isn’t easy, whether it’s our economic system doomed to failure, or that our governments could actually completely sell us out to the banks, or that the winsome Blair could lie through such white teeth.

We learned so many many details about the official 9/11 story, how can we possibly bring ourselves to question it? There is too much that we’d have to change. How could we be certain about ANYTHING?!

Well, tough. Details of a story are how you catch liars out. Does it match up? How are the alibis? Is the story airtight? – What happened? Did everyone give up watching crime shows in Britain over the last 10 years??

But the scale of 9/11 remains Everest – or Alice’s rabbit hole. The 9/11 Commission Report has 567 pages! Who’d bother mastering that stuff, let alone the counter story?

Almost no-one. The lie, if it is a lie, is too big. Hitler and Goebbels nod. So what must we do? We must attack the – conspiracy – theorist – whacko – nutjobs – whenever they present themselves. We must hold onto our beliefs intact. Don’t get into detail, avoid discussion, just slag them off. They’re ignorant, they’re a distraction, they waste their lives on trivia, what use are they!?

So what are the details we should avoid? No. No. No. Really! You’re much better off just slagging them off. Remember, go for the man not the ball. Hmm. Well, just in case, what’s the stuff I should avoid?

Sigh. Well, ok. One. How the buildings came down. Say FEMA and the NIST reports covered it; they proved it was fire. But avoid the detail. They’ll say they’re the only steel-framed buildings in history to collapse due to fire; tell them, don’t forget the planes, duh! If they mention thermite and nanothermite being found in WTC dust just say they were mistaken or it was planted, or something. They’ll bring up WTC7 which came down about 5.20 in freefall, no plane involved, symmetrically, on its footprint. But stick to your guns: it had serious fires, etc. – don’t get into cops and countdowns over radios. When Silverstein said pull it, remember he meant the fire team inside, not the building. Silverstein? He’s the guy who bought the whole site for a few billion six weeks prior. But best not go there. The hijackers: avoid talk about precise identities, avoid 8 or 9 of them still alive. And avoid the official stuff! Definitely avoid the FBI not wanting Osama bin Laden for 9/11 because there was no “hard evidence”, and really avoid the FBI saying in court that cellphone calls don’t work from aircraft at altitude. No-one can do anything with that stuff! When Rumsfeld mentioned the missile that hit this building or Flight 93 being shot down, or when Bush talked about the terrorists who planned to plant explosives in the towers, these were just slips of the tongue – they got confused. Remember, a 757 hit the Pentagon, its wings folded up, it slid inside the 16’ hole and burned up. The FBI has all the evidence. Don’t talk about air force pilots jumping up and down wanting to fly, or Andrews base only 10 miles away. Don’t talk about the July change in orders which routed hijack interceptions through Rumsfeld. Or the number of military wargames going on causing chaos. Or the way air force changed its story 3 times. Remember Barbara Olson? Well, forget her. The FBI said in court her calls didn’t happen. So forget about her husband Ted’s story or that she’s the only one who mentions boxcutters. We KNOW what they did! Don’t get into Shanksville and precisely what evidence was on the ground, and don’t confirm that the scar the plane crashed in pre-existed. Again avoid the cell phone calls being impossible cos that means the whole Let’s Roll thing is at risk and, boy, do we need our heroes. William Rodriguez may be a hero but he’s clearly confused by the day – he didn’t feel a huge basement explosion in tower 1 at 8.30: nothing happened till 8.46! The seismograph is anomalous, the huge spikes just before each tower fell are coincidental, just noise. Don’t get into Cheney watching the attack on the Pentagon happen live from the White House bunker.

Phew, that’s a lot to remember! No – don’t remember ANY of it! If they talk about these things and you’re getting nowhere, remember: just walk away. Say you haven’t got time for this. Or that it’s all been disproved. Or look it’s ten years ago we’ve all got our lives to get on with.

What if they say, “Mom, this is Mark Bingham”? Look! Just walk away. Remember, you’ll never get anywhere with someone with that level of delusion.
